Dr. Menno Vriens, professor of Endocrine Surgical Oncology, went to Med School at the Leiden University in The Netherlands. Hereafter he spent a year in the endocrine surgical lab of Prof. Orlo Clark and Quan-Yang Duh in San Francisco, investigating familial nonmedullary thyroid cancer. After obtaining his PhD degree at the Utrecht University, he finished his surgical residency at the University Medical Center Utrecht (UMCU). The next two years he spent abroad as a fellow for the Dutch Cancer Society. He spent a few months in Kiev to operate on Chernobyl patients, in Chicago to get more familiar with robotic surgery and eventually back to San Francisco for translational research on thyroid cancer. Currently he is the program director of the Department of Surgery at the UMCU and board member of the Dutch Board of Surgery. He is a pioneer in surgical innovations in the field of endocrine surgery and participates in global surgical educational programs like the IAES (International Association of Endocrine Surgeons) post-graduate courses. His research focus is on prognostic molecular markers and novel therapeutic agents in both sporadic and familial endocrine cancers. He is involved in both clinical, translational and epidemiological studies, both nationwide and globally. He published over 140 peer reviewed papers and contributed to more than 10 book chapters. Next to the Annals of Thyroid, he is also member of the editorial board of the World Journal of Surgery.
