Gianluca Donatini, MD, PhD, FEBS-ES (Endocrine Surgery)

Dr. Donatini is currently teaches General Surgery at the University of Poitiers and directs graduate and post-graduate students in endocrine surgery. He is Consultant Surgeon of the General and Endocrine Unit of the Surgical Department of the University of Poitiers, France.

Dr. Donatini graduated from Pisa University, Italy with a MD in minimally invasive thyroid surgery and completed the residency program in General Surgery in the Department of General and Endocrine Surgery of Prof Paolo Miccoli in Pisa, Italy.He had an internship period at Brown University, RI, USA in endocrine surgery with Prof JM Monchik and obtained the ECFMG Certificate. Dr. Donatini has a postgraduate fellowship in endocrine surgery at CHU Lille, France with Prof F Pattou and Prof B Carnaille and in minimally invasive adrenal surgery at Essen University, Germany with Prof M Walz. He obtained his PhD degree at the University of Pisa, in Proteomics analysis of biomarkers of thyroid cancer and lately the HDR at University of Poitiers, France. He is board certified in Endocrine Surgery - DES Diplome.

Dr. Donatini served the ESES (European Society of Endocrine Surgeons) as member of the Research and Education Committee, as Auditor and for the period 2018-2020 in the Nominating Committee. He also contributes for the development of Education and Research of the AFCE (Association Francophone de Chirurgie Endocrinienne). Dr. Donatini participates in the Editorial Board of BMC Surgery, Otolaryngology and he is currently reviewer for Surgical Endoscopy, British Medical Journal Case Reports, Journal of Pancreas, World Journal of Pediatrics, Minerva Chirurgica, Saudi Medical Journal, The Scientific World Journal, Cogent Medicine. 

Current surgical activities of Dr. Donatini comprehend Adrenal, Thyroid, Parathyroid and Neuro-Endocrine Tumors and he is expert in minimally invasive procedures including laparoscopic adrenalectomy, thyroidectomy and parathyroidectomy.

Research Overview

Dr. Donatini’s research involves adrenal disease (particularly adrenal cancer and pheochromocytoma), neuromonitored thyroid surgery, thyroid oncology and parathyroid diseases. He is also involved in basic research on cellular transplantation at the INSERM Unit 1082 of University of Poitiers. 

Dr. Donatini developed a unique teaching model in endocrine surgery at the Anatomy and Biomechanics Simulation Laboratory at the University of Poitiers, France. This model used a reperfused reventilated human cadaver which allows surgical simulation and teaching of endocrine surgery mimicking living human being parameters during surgery.

Dr. Donatini has authored more than 70 articles and textbook chapters on topics of endocrine or endocrine related surgery and participate in multicentric national and international studies. His H-Index is currently 16.
